The Viniyoga of Yoga
The word viniyoga means application. I follow the teaching of Desikachar and Krishnamacharya which means that I believe that yoga poses need to be adapted to the individual. We all have a different starting point and that is influenced by our age, gender, health, lifestyle, etc. So we are not all the same and our yoga practice needs to respect and adapt to this.
In the yoga poses breath and movement work together which, as well as helping our breathing, leads to a very mentally focused way of practising. It helps us separate from the rest of our day and create some ‘space’ for us.
The yoga poses are often used dynamically (we move in and out of them linked to the breath) which helps promote strength and prepares us to stay in them. We are using yoga poses to support strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.
